Have you ever wondered if IPL really works on your dark spots? And if it does work, how does it do it???? To find out the answer to both of those questions, read on!

IPL, or intense pulsed light, is a technology that utilizes broad spectrum light to produce energy and heat in a concentrated area. The light is transmitted through a hand piece directly onto the skin. The light then penetrates the skin and is absorbed by the melanin (pigment) in the dark spots. The hand piece controlling the light contains filters that adjust to different wavelengths to allow for optimal treatment of various skin types and lesions.

Once the melanin has absorbed the light energy produced by the hand piece, the area of skin is damaged. The body naturally processes the debris left in the damaged area of skin by pushing it towards the surface. The debris turns to scabs which naturally exfoliates off of the skin in a few days. Some of the pigment may also be absorbed into the body and processed through the body’s lymphatic system.

After treatment, the dark spots will fade in color, leaving your natural skin tone behind. While some skin types and dark spots may take several IPL treatments to completely disappear, noticeable fading should occur after the first treatment.
